Kundalika River Rafting

The Kundalika river near Kolad is one of the few dam-fed rivers close to Mumbai and Pune, which means the rapids here are consistently strong through most of the year, regardless of the monsoon. Water is released from the Bhira dam upstream in timed bursts, and rafting sessions are scheduled around these releases so you get a genuine Grade II-III whitewater run rather than a lazy float. Over a stretch of roughly 12-14 km, the raft moves through a series of rapids with names like Summer Time, Store Rapid and Cliff Jump, interspersed with calmer pools where you can catch your breath, swim alongside the raft, or simply take in the Sahyadri hills rising on either bank. This is a straightforward day trip from Mumbai or Pune, built for people who want an adrenaline hit without giving up a whole weekend. You'll be geared up in a certified life jacket and helmet, briefed on paddle commands by a trained raft guide, and then it's about 45-60 minutes of continuous rafting down to the takeout point near Kolad village. The day wraps up with a simple riverside lunch, making this an easy there-and-back plan that still delivers a proper adventure.

Highlights

  • 12-14 km of dam-released Grade II-III whitewater rafting on the Kundalika river
  • Certified life jackets, helmets and trained raft guides for every boat
  • Consistent rapids year-round thanks to scheduled Bhira dam water release
  • Scenic Sahyadri hill backdrop with calm pools for swimming breaks
  • Riverside lunch included after the rafting session

Who is this for?

Best suited to anyone reasonably fit and comfortable in water, aged 8 to 60; basic swimming ability is recommended though life jackets are mandatory and provided throughout.

Kundalika and Kolad river rafting are the same 12–14 km rafting stretch on the Kundalika river at Kolad, Raigad, run on the Bhira dam water release. The two listings are just different start batches — pick whichever date suits you. See also the Kolad River Rafting and our River Rafting overview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know swimming for this rafting trip?

Basic comfort in water helps, but you don't need to be a strong swimmer. Certified life jackets are mandatory for everyone on board and guides are trained in water rescue.

What does Grade II-III rapids mean?

It's a standard whitewater difficulty scale. Grade II-III means moderate rapids with some irregular waves and manageable obstacles — exciting but not extreme, suitable for first-timers with a guide.

Will rafting still happen if it doesn't rain?

Yes. The Kundalika is a dam-released river, so rapids are generated by scheduled water release from the Bhira dam rather than rainfall, keeping the experience consistent almost year-round.
